What is 3D CAD?

Three dimensional Computer Aided Draughting (3D CAD or Solid Modelling) enables a designer/product developer/customers to visualise and, in some cases, measure the characteristics of performance of a product as a 3D model before it is actually manufactured and exists in the real world.

To the designer/product developer the ability to measure such characteristics as:-

  • Tensile shear and hoop stress,
  • Thermal effects,
  • Flow analysis for fluids and air,
  • Acoustical ramifications,

  • all enable a confidence that the product developed will be fit for purpose, safe to use and meets the design brief and specifications.

To the customer 3D Solid Modelling enables you to:-
  • see the product develop,
  • ensure it meets your exact specifications,
  • take basic physical measurements of the product using specialist free software,
  • employ pictorial views for advertising purposes.

  • Once the product has been developed electonically then it is possible, if chosen, for a prototype to be developed using a technique of "Rapid Prototyping" or working drawings can be produced from the model ready for manufacture.
